Australian scientists make Australian wool even better
The Australian Sheep Cooperative Research Centre has developed a new computer program that calculates the profitability of individual sheep based on their fleece weight, the fibre diameter of their wool and body weight.
For the first time Australian woolgrowers have the ability to pick-out the top performers in a flock – creating flocks that produce only the highest quality wool.
“Contrary to popular belief sheep are not all alike – in fact, they vary as greatly as individual people. Some sheep are vastly more productive, and hence profitable, than others,” said Professor James Rowe CEO of the Sheep CRC.
“Now thanks to technology we are starting to see, and manage, sheep as individuals – for optimum animal care and profitability.”
Professor Rowe also thanked Australian Merino sheep for consistent high-quality Australian fleeces: “This animal is amazingly hardy. It grows wool all the time, even when conditions are very tough.”
This new research and development initiative coupled with the natural talent of the Australian Merino means Australian Merino wool will stay on its pedestal as the most durable, versatile and high-quality fibre in the world.
Australian Wool Innovation (AWI) is a major supporter of the Australian Sheep Cooperative Research Centre.
